The Odyssey is finally out in theaters!
The new movie from Oscar-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan, which was released in theaters on July 17, is based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, chronicles the tale of Odysseus, who must make the arduous journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War.
Led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, the all-star cast also includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and John Leguizamo.
Since the movie has a runtime of 2 hours and 52 minutes (172 minutes), you may be wondering if you’ll be able to stay in your seat and watch the entire movie without getting up to use the bathroom.
However, if you do need to use the bathroom, we’ve figured out the best times to get up so you don’t miss anything important. We’ve also detailed what you’ve missed while away from your seat!

27 minutes and 30 seconds
When Odysseus says, “With a little luck and the right winds, we’ll see some of the world and still get home before Agamemnon,” that’s a good time to take a 3 minute and 50 second bathroom break.
While you’re gone, you’ll miss a night-scene of Odysseus holding his wife’s pendent of Athena.
The scenes are also mostly about sailing and pillaging a village for supplies. As they go ashore an island, Odysseus and his crew see a single sheep and follow it back to a cave.
58 minutes and 50 seconds
When Odysseus says, “The men became more convinced that I offended Posideon,” that’s a good time to take a 4 minute and 10 seconds bathroom break.
At this moment, you’re missing the ships getting stuck in storms. When the crew lands the ships on an island, they find the place is inhabited by large men known as Laestrygonians. As Odysseus orders his men to retreat back to their ships, the trees move and trap some of the men for the giants.
Most of the men make it back to the ships, but the Laestrygonians stop two of the smaller boats and kill all the men on board.
1 hour, 45 minutes, and 10 seconds
After first mate Eurylochus asks Odysseus, “What else did Tiresias tell you?,” you can take a 3 minute and 30 second bathroom break.
You won’t miss anything important to the plot besides the crew landing on an island in search for food. Odysseus tells the men not to slaughter any of the cattle as they are sacred. The men agree, but later in the night, Odysseus is awoken by Athena, who leads him to a pit where the men are secretly eating one of the cows they killed.
2 hours, 12 minutes, and 35 seconds
You can take a quick 3 minute bathroom break when the bard stamps his staff and says, “Because the darkness of victory shrouds the…”
In this scene, Telemachus leads the beggar (Odysseus) into the palace where he wanders around the table and begs for food. As Antinous and his friend scheme to kill Telemachus, Odysseus begs the man for food.
When Antinous questions if he’ll then ask him for something, Odysseus responds, “No, I have something for you,” and gives Antinous the wooden stick that Sinon asked him to deliver.
Antinous becomes angry and throws a chair and Odysseus.
You’ll want to hurry back to your seat because something important happens after that quick 3 minutes!
