There’s a trend taking over TikTok and other social media platforms at the moment, and it’s all about saxophones.
If you’ve noticed the term “the saxophones are getting louder” used on social media recently, you might be wondering what that means.
The term is actually based on a scene from 1991’s Boyz n the Hood.
In the scene, Ricky (Morris Chestnut), a high school running back, gets chased down by rival gang, with the score featuring intensifying sounds of a saxophone. Once the horns get loud, it’s a cue that something bad is about to happen.
According to Know Your Meme, a TikTok user started the trend by writing: “POV: You in a 90s hood movie about to move out the trenches but you hear them saxophones going crazy so you know you finna get slimed.”
As the sound got popular, more users began to use it to describe situations where things seem fine until “the saxophones” start playing, and there’s an abrupt plot twist of some kind.
“The saxophones are getting louder” now basically means that something is about to go wrong in the video. Usually people are oblivious in a clip until something happens. Even Morris Chestnut himself got into the fun!
