Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Norway’s new Queen, was temporarily released from his house arrest sentence to attend the funeral of his step-grandfather.
Norway’s King Harald was laid to rest during a state funeral on Wednesday (September 9) at Oslo Cathedral.
For those who don’t know, Marius is the 29-year-old son of Queen Mette-Marit, who is married to King Haakon. She gave birth to Marius during a previous relationship before meeting the now-King.
Why is Marius Borg Høiby on house arrest?
Marius was found guilty of two counts of rape back in June 2026 and was sentenced to four years in prison. He was transferred to house arrest a month later while he appeals his sentence.
It was announced earlier this week that Marius’ house arrest has been extended until October 7.
The alleged incidents occurred at the new King’s estate at Skaugum in 2018, and with a woman in Oslo in 2024. He was also convicted of abusing an ex-girlfriend Nora Haukland, a Norwegian influencer, and of causing “serious bodily harm to another partner, in whose flat he was arrested in the upmarket Frogner area of Oslo in August 2024.” For a full breakdown of the allegations and convictions, head to the BBC.
While he does not hold any royal titles or serve as a working royal, Marius has frequently attended events with the royal family over the years.
