Julia Roberts is returning to Broadway for the first time in 20 years and she once again will be working with Paul Rudd!
The Oscar-winning actress made her Broadway debut in 2006 in the play Three Days of Rain, co-starring Paul. Now, they’ll reunite on stage in the first-ever Broadway production of the play Small Mouth Sounds.
A star-studded cast is set for the play, with Sarah Paulson, Martin Freeman, Greta Lee, and Isaac Powell all confirmed for the show as well.

What is Small Mouth Sounds about?
The play Small Mouth Sounds originally premiered off-Broadway in 2015. It’s written by Bess Wohl, who just won the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for her acclaimed play Liberation.
Six strangers arrive at an upstate spiritual retreat determined to escape their problems, turn inward, and transform their lives. Spoiler: it does not go according to plan. As personal baggage spills everywhere, personalities clash, and unexpected desires take hold, Bess Wohl’s Small Mouth Sounds is revealed as both a startlingly original and profoundly affecting play about the search for wholeness in a broken world.
Something very unique about Small Mouth Sounds is that it features very little dialogue.
In the author’s note for the published play, Bess writes, “This play was inspired by a silent spiritual retreat I participated in at the Omega Institute in upstate New York. Like that retreat, much of the action of the play happens without words.”
How you can see Small Mouth Sounds on Broadway
Performances begin on Thursday, February 18, 2027 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in New York City ahead of an official opening night on Thursday, March 18.
The play is directed by three-time Tony winner Joe Mantello, who is also directing the play Downstate, set to begin performances in Fall 2026 at the same theatre.
Theatregoers who purchase presale tickets for Downstate, beginning on Thursday (September 10) at 12pm ET, will receive an exclusive, single-use presale code granting access to purchase select Orchestra and Front Mezzanine tickets to this spring’s Small Mouth Sounds, for $250 each.
This code will allow each purchaser to buy the same number of Small Mouth Sounds tickets as Downstate tickets purchased, up to four tickets per customer, while supplies last.
In a statement, producer Scott Rudin said, “There are a great many serious theatergoers who want to see plays of quality on Broadway, and who are willing and eager to opt in early and buy great seats at great prices. These theatergoers continually demonstrate that they know what they want. A serious Broadway playgoer – the audience member we most rely on, whose interest is ignited by authentically ambitious work – is going to need to see both of these plays. Pairing them this way – i.e. making them accessible to theatergoers who know how to say yes when there’s something worth saying yes to – is great for the audience and also great for the plays.”
