Ben Jones has sadly passed away.
The actor and former congressman, best known for The Dukes of Hazzard, passed away at his home in Washington, Virginia on Sunday (August 9) at the age of 84.
He had a heart attack, according to his wife, Alma Viator.
“I lost the love of my life today. Ben passed from a massive heart attack. He was home resting in his favorite chair waiting for the Braves to come on and whoop the Yankees. Ben had the most amazing, rich, full life. He loved and was loved by so many. He will be missed. I loved him so so much,” she wrote in a Facebook post.
He was best known for playing Cooter Davenport on the hit CBS show The Dukes of Hazzard from 1979 to 1985, appearing as a main cast member for all seven seasons, as well as 1997’s Reunion! and 2000’s Hazzard in Hollywood.
After the show’s cancellation, he ran for Congress in Georgia and won, serving in the United States House of Representatives from January 1989, to January 1993.
After his time in Congress, he opened a Dukes of Hazzard museum in Virginia, which expanded into multiple locations. He also published a memoir, Redneck Boy in the Promised Land, in 2007, in which he opened up about his struggle with alcoholism over the years.
He also received several records over the years. His last appearance in a TV show as 2005’s Surface, playing a grocery clerk. He also appeared as himself in 2021’s Unbreakable.
