Reese Witherspoon is addressing the long-awaited third Legally Blonde movie!
The world of Elle Woods is returning this summer with the new prequel television show, Elle, but there’s been a threequel movie in the works for several years.
It’s been over 20 years since the second movie hit theaters, and now Reese is giving a new update on the status of the third, which is co-written by Mindy Kaling and Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Dan Goor.

“Absolutely,” she told Bustle when asked if the third movie was still happening. “It’s a whole world that we want to build with this character. Not dissimilar to what happened with Barbie two summers ago, there’s a feeling that women want to rally around these characters that were part of their childhood and celebrate the idea that Elle Woods is more than the color pink. She’s part of your identity of self-worth and accomplishment.”
She also dished on the lasting impact of the first film.
“I had no idea. We worked really hard on the messaging. I was determined to make sure it was a story about a woman that wasn’t about her romantic relationships,” Reese said. “It was about how she worked hard to accomplish something very difficult on her own terms, and no relationship would define her early 20s like that.”
The last update on Legally Blonde 3 was over a year ago, when Mindy Kaling revealed a completed script was turned in a couple months prior.
