Bella Thorne is officially helming Spring Breakers 2, along with starring the forthcoming sequel.
The 28-year-old actress is also writing her own screenplay for the production, which was first announced last week during her appearance on Call Her Daddy this month.
In the 2012 original, directed by Harmony Korine, four college girls hold up a restaurant in order to fund their spring break vacation. While partying, drinking, and taking drugs, they are arrested, only to be bailed out by a drug and arms dealer. James Franco, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine, and Gucci Mane all starred in the film.
Who will star in the sequel?
Right now, there’s a casting call in the works.
Capturing the spirit of the original, while pushing into new territory, the production will launch an international open casting call spearheaded by legendary casting director Mary Vernieu (Knives Out, Euphoria, Black Swan), founder of Betty Mae Casting, who returns to the franchise. She will work together with acclaimed casting director and frequent collaborator, Jessica Kelly (Midsommar, Hereditary, Euphoria), on the search to give undiscovered talent the opportunity to land breakout roles in the new film’s provocative next chapter.
What do we know about the sequel so far?
Producer Chris Hanley offered a statement.
“After seeing an early cut of Bella’s feature debut, Color Your Hurt, Roberta and I instantly recognized a fearless, disruptive directorial talent, and a new creative voice. Her visual style and vision to weave real-life non-actors with seasoned performers gave her version of the story an unvarnished authenticity that completely blew us away. We invited her to bring that same raw energy to her own Spring Breakers project, and her screenplay offers a brand-new, female POV. This isn’t a traditional sequel. It’s Bella’s singular vision, capturing the rebellious DNA of the original film for a new generation.” – Producer Chris Hanley
Here’s a synopsis so far: “Five girls enter the wildest party of their lives on spring break, only to realize they were never guests, just targets.”

I’ve always been drawn to stories that explore the unapologetic, unfiltered side of youth culture, and I can’t wait to deliver a wild, high-stakes thrill ride that honors the first film while forging its own distinct path.”
A previously announced sequel to Spring Breakers, titled Salvation Mountain, “remains active within the franchise and will still move forward,” but Bella will no longer star, the press release notes.
