Orville Peck is opening up about the crisis that led him to cancel his Bronco Tour in 2023.

The 38-year-old singer revealed that he attempted suicide shortly before announcing he needed to step away to protect his mental health.

“I was a bad addict, a coping alcoholic,” Orville told Rolling Stone in a new interview. “And I had this spiral moment, where I went back to my hotel and tried to take my life.”

“It was a big turning point for me, with a lot of realizations to come. It was something that needed to happen,” he continued.

How the experience shaped his new album

The musician said he was in “one of the worst places” of his life during a year that included a breakup and rehab. Those experiences form the story behind his fourth album, Mule.

“This record is a chronological account of the year I lost my way,” he wrote while announcing the project on Instagram.

Orville turned his resistant to treatment into the album track “Rehab Blues.”

“What I was really trying to capture in terms of the concept, there was no way to gloss over or sugarcoat it,” he explained.

Mule arrives September 18. It’s first single, “Too Little, Too Late,” is available now.
