Penelope Cruz‘s new movie is a hit at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival!

The 52-year-old Oscar-winning actress stepped out for the premiere of her new movie La bola negra on Thursday (May 21) held at Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France.

For the event, Penelope looked chic in an one shoulder black Chanel dress with a high slit.

Joining Penelope at the premiere were her co-stars Guitarricadelafuente, Carlos Gonzalez, Miguel Bernardeau, Milo Quifes, and Lola Dueñas along with co-directors and co-writers Javier Calvó and Javier Ambrossi.

Here’s the movie’s synopsis per Cannes: “La bola negra tells the interconnected stories of three men in three different eras. Three lives intimately linked by sexuality and desire, pain and inheritance, and one of Federico García Lorca´s last, unfinished works.”

The movie received an overwhelming positive reaction from the audience at the premiere, landing a 20-minute standing ovation! It came very close to breaking the Cannes record for an ovation in a premiere. The record is currently held by Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, which clocked a 22-minute ovation in 2006.

As the audience continued to applaud, Calvó and Ambrossi told the crowd, “To everyone who thinks that we’re gonna step back in our LGBTQ rights, I have bad news!”

Last year, it was announced that Penelope and husband Javier Bardem will once again be sharing the screen in the new thriller movie Bunker.
